Nestled in the heart of my living room, I’ve packed a corner with some of my favorite things. Though it defies conventional decor rules, it’s my colorful corner, an amalgamation of treasures that tell the story of my family’s personality and my love for the unexpected.
Antique Antlers and Disco Ball Drama
At first glance, antique antlers juxtaposed with a disco ball might seem like an odd pairing, but I can never get enough of the unexpected. The antlers used to hang in a very serious study in London. Why not add a glittery disco ball? Disco balls always remind me of the 70s. I met one of my very best friends at a fifth-grade birthday party at Dingbats, a disco in Chicago. The discoball reminds me of her. The disco ball casts playful reflections that dance across the room every morning. Hard not to smile.
Pop Art and Pee-wee Herman
Keeping a close eye on all that happens in the room is a piece of pop art featuring Pee-wee Herman imploring us to “not hate!”. He is a nod to my fondness for quirky nostalgia and bold graphic design. His larger-than-life presence and ever-timely reminder to love each other (or at least don’t hate), brings a smile to my face and injects a dose of irreverent charm into the space.
Lucite and Family Memories
A lucite table takes up little visual space. It holds a favorite family photo, taken on the beach during the pandemic. I told my kids to dress in the colors of jelly beans; they understood the assignment. I love this photo, with its bright colors, all of us together on the beach after being in lockdown. It’s a reminder of a time when the world opened up and things felt hopeful.

Pink Buddha and Kerri Rosenthal’s Artistry
I adore my pink Buddha, who sits peacefully amidst the color. He reminds me to breathe a bit deeper and a bit more slowly. Kerri Rosenthal’s acrylic hearts add layers of texture and depth. With a Valentine’s birthday, I grew up adoring all the hearts displayed in the stores in February. “Love” was the first word I could spell ~ before I could spell my own name, so the word “love” and hearts have become part of my signature.
Coffee Table Books and Merimekko Magic
Stacked on the lucite table are coffee table books, each a portal into a dimension of inspiration. I have never been unhappy curled on the couch, gushing over coffee table books with a cup of tea, in hand. They invite me to delve into my creativity and imagination. Tucked underneath the table is a bright Marimekko quilt ready to be spread on the floor where our granddaughter plays. The leopard stool is perfect for quick and additional seating when needed.
Unexpected Fun: Ice Cream Cones and Faux Boxwood
And then, there’s the unexpected delight of the ice cream cone sculpture. I plopped in a faux boxwood ball for fun. It’s a whimsical touch that reminds me of childhood innocence. Also? Let’s not take decor too seriously!
A Playful Corner Reminds Me Of What Matters Most
My colorful corner reflects some of the happiest parts of my life. It is a bit unexpected, sure, but I love curated joy. Surrounding yourself with things that spark joy and creativity is a gift. Life is serious enough as it is. Home isn’t just where the heart is. Hopefully, it’s where the soul finds its most authentic expression.
Welcome to my quirky corner—a space where every corner holds a story, and every piece invites you to embrace the joy of living colorfully.
